Sealing and insulation

Sponge silicone sheet

VMQ sheet with a closed-cell, non-interconnected structure that blocks water, air and dust. It combines the thermal and chemical resistance of solid silicone with the compressibility, thermal insulation and light weight of a cellular material. It seals with very low closing forces, absorbs surface irregularities and recovers its thickness after thousands of cycles.

StructureClosed cells · non-interconnected
Density200 to 500 kg/m³
Thicknesses1.5 to 25 mm
Temperature–60 °C to +200 °C

Water absorption < 3 % (ASTM D1056) · UV, ozone and weathering resistance · high-temperature adhesive backing option · 6 grades available: standard, FDA food-grade, fire-retardant EN 45545-2, metal-detectable, high recovery and UL 94 V-0.

The product

Closed cells that compress 50–70 % with low closing force and recover their original thickness.

When a seal needs to close with little force — oven door, equipment lid, access panel — solid silicone requires high tightening and, if the surface has irregularities or wide tolerances, does not adapt. Closed-cell sponge silicone solves that case: it compresses to 50–70 % of its thickness under very low forces and absorbs surface variations that solid silicone cannot cover.

Series 15 – Platinum-cure cellular silicone (foam) for extrusion

Series 15 is a cellular (foam) silicone formulation catalysed with platinum, designed specifically for the extrusion process. Its cellular structure allows lightweight, flexible profiles to be produced, ideal for ensuring sealing on irregular surfaces. Platinum curing gives it higher purity and better mechanical properties compared with standard peroxide foams.

Series 33 – Platinum-cure cellular silicone (foam) fire-retardant (EN 45545-2)

Series 33 is a cellular (foam) silicone blend catalysed with platinum, designed for processing by extrusion. It is characterised by good sealing performance combined with advanced safety properties: good fire resistance and good self-extinguishing behaviour. It complies with the requirements of EN 45545-2 (R22 and R23, HL1 and HL2 levels), making it ideal for lightweight sealing profiles in transport and demanding applications.

Platinum-catalysed cellular silicone, processable by extrusion. It offers good sealing, excellent fire behaviour and self-extinguishing properties, and a wide range of available colours. Specially developed for railway applications and thermal sealing with compliance to EN 45545-2 R22/R23 (HL1–HL2).

Design rule · density and thickness

Sponge is designed by density, thickness and available closing force

Design rule: the sponge must compress between 25 % and 50 % of its initial thickness to seal effectively. If the closing force is low — manual closure, hinges, clips — choose a soft density (200-280 kg/m³) and greater thickness. If the surface is machined and the force is controlled, medium density (280-360) or firm (360-500) with smaller thickness.

Soft density: maximum compressibility, fast recovery after decompression, best for compressible seals under low force. Medium density: balance between compressibility and resistance to permanent deformation. Firm density: maximum resistance to crushing, ideal for anti-vibration floors or high-load damping.

Each batch is delivered with a certificate of conformity and roll traceability. For regulated grades (food-grade S15, metal-detectable, fire-retardant S33) specific documentation is included: FDA, white-listed ferrite, EN 45545-2 R22/R23.
