What the sector demands

Thermal and radiological stability, low outgassing, traceability under the nuclear chain.

Elastomer components in nuclear installations operate in controlled areas and auxiliary services (no contact with the primary circuit), subjected to low-to-medium dose gamma and beta radiation, partial vacuum, differential pressure, oxidising agents and prolonged thermal cycles. The nuclear supply chain is governed by NF EN ISO 19443, complementary to ISO 9001. Chemical family selection (general VMQ, cryogenic PVMQ or fluid-resistant FVMQ) depends on the operator's qualification dossier.

Four technical requirements

Thermal · radiological · chemical · traceability

01

Extreme thermal range

Operation between −110 °C (PVMQ Series 5 cryogenic) and +300 °C continuous with peaks up to +315 °C (VMQ Series 9). Prolonged thermal cycles with mechanical properties stabilised by post-cure in sealed stainless-steel oven. NF ISO 188 accelerated ageing tests documented batch by batch.

02

Stability under radiation

Stable behaviour of the VMQ, PVMQ and FVMQ families under low and medium gamma and beta radiation doses in controlled areas and auxiliary services. Qualification of each formulation to its specific cumulative dose is the responsibility of the nuclear operator per its qualification dossier.

03

Chemical resistance and low outgassing

Resistance to ozone, mineral oils, dilute acids and oxidising agents. Low volatile emission after post-cure, important for environments with partial vacuum or differential pressure. NF ISO 1817 immersion testing available according to the service fluid.

04

NF EN ISO 19443 traceability

Nuclear supply chain documented per NF EN ISO 19443 (complementary to ISO 9001). Each batch leaves with a unique number, compound mechanical data sheet (NF ISO 37 tensile, NF ISO 7619-1 Shore A hardness, NF ISO 815-1 compression set) and dimensional control plan per ISO 3302-1 E1 (extrusion) or M2 (moulding).

Manufacturing under nuclear control

ISO 8 cleanroom with batch-level qualification dossier and NF EN ISO 19443 chain

The Apt plant (France) operates extrusion and moulding of compounds for auxiliary nuclear services under ISO 9001 + EN 9100 with an ISO 8 cleanroom per ISO 14644-1. The supply chain is documented per NF EN ISO 19443. Each batch leaves with the compound CoA, mechanical data sheet, ISO 3302-1 dimensional control plan and certificate of conformity to feed the operator's qualification dossier.

ProSilicones64 provides formulation, mechanical and dimensional tests, batch control and certificate of conformity under NF EN ISO 19443.
  • Silicone components are typically applied in controlled zones and auxiliary services (sealing of electrical cabinets, cable penetrations, ventilation ducts, technical rooms), not in direct contact with the primary circuit.
Recommended Progress series

Catalogue for controlled areas and auxiliary nuclear services

Four series of the Progress catalogue cover the typical scenarios of the nuclear and advanced energy sector: extreme temperature in thermal systems, general-purpose sealing, high tear strength in zones with mechanical handling and cryogenics for very low temperature auxiliary circuits.

01

S09 · Extreme temperature

Peroxide-cured VMQ with high-temperature additives · Shore A 40-68 · operating range −60 / +300 °C with peaks up to +315 °C. For gaskets and sealing in thermal systems, hot air ducts and zones close to high-temperature process equipment. Highest continuous temperature in the catalogue.

02

S02 · Multipurpose VMQ · broad range

Peroxide-cured VMQ · Shore A 10-90 (widest range of the catalogue) · range −60 / +200 °C (+300 °C transient). For general-purpose gaskets, profiles and technical parts in controlled areas. Multiple FDA, CE 1935, BfR coverage according to colorant for dual-use applications.

03

S07 · High tear strength + high temperature

Peroxide-cured VMQ · Shore A 60-70 · range −60 / +230 °C · tear resistance 30-35 kN/m. For inflatable gaskets, bellows, panel sealing and zones with repeated mechanical handling or shear stress. FDA in compatible versions.

04

S05 · Cryogenic PVMQ

Peroxide-cured PVMQ · Shore A 50 · operating range −110 °C / +200 °C. Polydimethylphenylvinylsiloxane with phenyl groups for cryogenics and vibration at very low temperature. For components in very low temperature auxiliary circuits, advanced cooling systems and zones with thermal shock.

Nuclear supply chain

Every batch feeds the nuclear operator's qualification dossier

The base polymer arrives with the supplier's CoA and technical declaration documenting the chemical family (VMQ, PVMQ or FVMQ). Each banbury assigns a unique batch number maintained from formulation to final packaging — mixing, calendering, extrusion or moulding, post-cure in sealed stainless-steel oven and ISO 3302-1 dimensional control.

Each shipment leaves with a certificate of conformity under NF EN ISO 19443, compound mechanical data sheet (NF ISO 37 tensile, NF ISO 7619-1 hardness, NF ISO 815-1 compression set, NF ISO 188 ageing), E1/M2 dimensional control plan and REACH / RoHS records. Final radiological qualification to the cumulative service dose is the responsibility of the operator.
