Compression moulding

Silicone parts by compression moulding

We manufacture silicone parts by compression moulding: a preform of VMQ compound is placed directly into the open mould and vulcanises under heat and pressure. The right process for large parts, high wall thicknesses, open geometries and pre-series with reduced tooling cost. Platinum or peroxide cure depending on the application.

The product

Compound preform in the open mould, vulcanisation under heat and pressure. Reduced tooling cost and flexibility in geometry.

The operator places the VMQ compound preform, weighed according to the part geometry, into the mould cavity. The press closes and holds pressure and temperature during the vulcanisation time set for each formulation. Post-curing in an oven (4 h at 200 °C) is applied on peroxide-cured series when the application requires the removal of volatile by-products; platinum-cured grades cure without post-curing.

Large parts and prototypes

Reduced tooling cost, parts that injection cannot make and design validation in pre-series

A compression mould is structurally simpler than an injection mould — no manifold, no runners, no automatic ejection — which reduces the initial investment. For pre-series of 5 to 500 units, functional prototypes or one-off parts, the tooling saving offsets the lower output per part.

The compression press accepts moulds with a larger projected surface for the same tonnage. Diaphragms, bellows, damping plates, manhole gaskets and thick-walled parts that exceed the capacity of injection presses are produced here without splitting.

Compression pre-series validate real tolerances, shrinkage and assembly before committing to a definitive injection mould. Same compound, same raw-material supplier, same catalogue series: the move to injection preserves the properties of the validated material.
